dialysis Flashcards
what is dialysis
the method of removing wastes from the blood when kidney failure occurs
two types of dialysis
- peritoneal dialysis
- haemodialysis
peritoneum
membrane that lines the inside of the abdominal cavity and covers abdominal organs such as stomach, liver, intestines.
- rich in blood supply
peritoneal dialysis
occurs inside body using the peritoneum as a membrane across which waste can be removed
- a catheter is placed through the wall of the abdomen and for adults, 2-3L fluid are passed through the catheter into abdominal cavity
- the fluid canaries glucose and other substances similar to components of blood
- after time, the fluid is drained out through the catheter, along with any wastes that have diffused from the blood
- usually done once a day
haemodialysis
involves passing the blood through an artificial kidney or dialysis machine
- blood passes through thousands of fine tubes, made of a differentially permabele membrane and immersed in a fluid
- concentration of substances in the fluid similar to components in blood (no waste though)
- patients spend about 4-5 hours attached to the machine and dialysis done x3 a week
