What is commodification?
When a linguistic variety or set of varieties is available for purchase.
Language is a social domain and is not normally boght or sold however it becomes available for purchase.

How does a language become a commodity?
Features of language become associated with a non-linguistic quality
For example the NE and call centres
Callers associate the north eastern accent with friendliness.
What is indexicality?
The association between linguistic form and meaning. It brings ideology to the forefront of linguistic variaton.
What is first order indexicality?
Correlation between particular linguistic form and social category percieved by an OUTSIDER e.g a linguist
What is second order indexicality?
Speakers justify the link between linguistic form and social category.
The feature becomes variable due to selfconsciousness
What is third order indexicality?
Forms which have been linked to this social category become the subject of overt comment by everyone
What is Enregisterment?
This is when a set of linguistic norms are acknowledged in a certain area.
These features then index certain characteristics associated with speakers of those varieties e.g. friendliness
How are Commodification and enregisterment linked to dialect awareness?
When people hear varieties they become aware of the distinctiveness of their own
