What is the purpose of a bubble study during an echo?

A

Saline bubbles injected during an echo can be seen on the monitor and help to visualize the flow of blood. A bubble study is done to determine if there is a PFO (patent foramen ovale) or an ASD (atrial septal defect.

A

Perfluren or (Optison) reflects ultrasound waves during echo procedures. It increases blood-tissue contact and improves visualization of ventricular walls
