Determine if is pregnant, no clothes over the area, no jewelry
Skull and spine x-rays
History of bleeding disorders or anticoagulant, no jewelry, cannon ball position or lean over bedside table, cleanse site and administer local anesthesia, complications (CSF leakage- lie flat, provide fluids, administer pain meds, epidural blood patch to seal off hole if headache persist)
Lumbar puncture
NPO 4 to 6 hrs prior, shellfish or iodine, history of bleeding or anticoagulants, assess BUN/Cr, no jewelry, void immediately before, metallic taste/warm sensation over face/jaw/tongue/lips/behind eyes, ensure clotting occurs, complication (hematoma or bleeding)
Cerebral angiography
NPO at least 4 hrs prior, shellfish or iodine allergy, assess BUN/Cr, supine position, no jewelry, painless, id sedated monitor until stable
CT scan: Cerebral computed
Safer for pregnant women, (no pacemakers, surgical clips, intravenous ports), shellfish or iodine allergy, no jewelry, NPO 4 to 8 hrs prior, claustrophobia,
MRI: magnetic resonance imaging scan
Glucose, based tracer, assess for history of diabetes, hyper or hypoglycemia before and after
PET: Positron emission tomography scan
Radioisotope, assess for history of diabetes, hyper or hypoglycemia before and after
SPECT: Single-photon emission CT
Review meds before, wash hair (eliminate oils, gels, sprays), sleep deprived, resting in chair or lying in bed
EEG: electroencephalography
Transducer (mid axillary posterior and anterior), normal 10-15, GCS 8 or comatose, shaved spot and cleanse with antibacterial soap, surgical aseptic, inspect insertion site Q24, vitals hourly, complication (infection or bleeding), limit monitoring to 3-5 days, irrigate only to maintain patency, keep drain closed
ICP: Intracranial pressure monitor
