what are the types of neuropathy in patient with diabetes?
peripheral, autonomic, proximal and focal neuropathy
what are the symptoms of a peripheral neuropathy?
pain/ loss of feeling in feet or hands
what are the symptoms of an autonomic neuropathy?
change in bowels/water works, sexual response, sweats, heart rate, BP
what are the symptoms of a proximal neuropathy?
pain in the thighs, hips or buttocks leading to leg weakness
what are the symptoms of focal neuropathy?
sudden weakness in one nerve or a group of nerves causing muscle weakness or pain
what are the risk factors for neuropathies?
length of diabetes, poor glucose control, high cholesterol, smoking, alcohol, genes, mechanical injury
what are the complications of peripheral nerve damage?
infections/ulcers, deformities, amputations
how can gastroparesis affect blood tests?
blood glucose can fluctuate due to abnormal food digestion
what are the treatment options for gastroparesis?
metoclopramide, domperidone, erythromycin or a gastric pacemaker
diabetic nephropathy can also be called?
Kimmelsteil-Wilson syndrome or glomerulosclerosis
what are the consequences of diabetic nephropathy?
hypertension, decline in renal function
what do we use to screen for nephropathy?
urinary albumin creatinine ratio
what common eye pathologies do diabetic patients get?
retinopathy, cataract, glaucoma, hyperglycaemia
what are psychiatric complications of diabetes?
depression, eating disorders, bi-polar and schizophrenia
