What is the prevalence of diabetes in children in the UK?
A
22,000 under 17 year olds have DM
97% of these have T1
- 5% of these have T2
- 5% have a rarer type

How do you manage DKA?
A
Fluid - dehydration to the management of DKA in children, we worry about the hyperglycaemia later (i.e. don’t worry about insulin) as is less acutely toxic and by correcting dehydration we switch off the ketosis
Calculations:
Also need to monitor output (hourly in/out) - need to make sure not too much or too fast as children are at greater risk of deadly cerebral oedema
Insulin -
Hourly glucose monitoring - the focus of management
2 hourly monitoring of electrolytes - esp. K+ and ketones
