DIABETES MELLITUS Flashcards
What is type 1 diabetes?
A state of absolute insulin deficeincy
What are the two subtypes of type 1 diabetes?
Type 1A - immune-mediated
Type 1B - non-immune-mediated
What are the auto-antibodies in type 1 diabetes?
Insulin
Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase
Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (IA-2)
Cation Transporter ZnT8
What is the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes?
- Auto-antibodies are triggered in a genetically susceptible individual.
- Auto-antibodies target pancreatic islet cells causing a loss of secretory capacity
- Eventually the beta cells completely lose their insulin secreting function.
What are the classic triad of symptoms of diabetes?
Weight Loss
Thirst and Polydipsia
Polyuria
What causes polyuria in diabetes?
Osmotic diuresis that results when blood glucose levels exceed the renal threshold
What causes thirst and polydipsia in diabetes?
This is due to a loss of fluid and electrolytes from excessive urination
What causes weight loss in diabetes?
Due to depletion and accelerated of fat ad muscle
What is the diagnostic criteria for diabetes?
Fasting glucose >7 mmol/l
Random glucose >11.1mmol/l
and SYMPTOMS
What is HbA1C?
This is glycated haemoglobin. It reflects blood glucose levels from the previous 12 weeks
Why can HbA1c not be used for the diagnosis of T1DM?
This is often a rapid onset therefore the blood glucose levels for the previous 12 weeks
What are ketone bodies?
A type of chemical that the liver produces when it breaks down fats
