Types of Diabetes
Type 1 (juvenile onset, insulin dependant, malnourished, destroyed beta cells, moderate genetic and environmental influence)
LADA (Adult onset over 35, slow progression to insulin dependence)
Type 2 (Adult onset, often not insulin dependent, Obese, high genetic and environmental influence, beta cells don’t produce enough insulin, insulin resistant)
MODY (Adult onset, most common, mono genetic, autosomal dominant, normal weight, defective insulin secretion)
Classic signs of diabetes
3 Ps
Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia
gotta eat, gotta drink, gotta pee
Therapy for DM is aimed at what 3 things?
LDL level below 100
A1c below 7.0 (150-160mg/dl)
BP below 140/80
DM lifestyle changes focus on what 3 areas?
BMI (target between 18.5-24.9)
