What is Hydroxychloroquine [Plaquenil®] used for?
It is a Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARD) used for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Malaria Prophylaxis (Malaria prophylaxis is started 1-2 wks prior to exposure through 4 wks following exposure)
What is the mechanism of action of Hydroxychloroquine [Plaquenil®]?
DMARD which:
Inhibits rheumatoid factor and acute phase reactants.
Interrupts parasitic vesicle functions by increasing pH.
Inhibits phospholipid metabolism by increasing pH.
Side effects of Hydroxychloroquine [Plaquenil®]?
ADVERSE EFFECTS Common: headache, photosensitivity SERIOUS ADVERSE EFFECTS Hypersensitivity: angioedema Ocular: retinopathy, vision changes
Drug interactions of Hydroxychloroquine [Plaquenil®]?
Botox- botox activity is impaired
Contraindications of Hydroxychloroquine [Plaquenil®]?
