Define ketoacidosis
consistent high blood sugars as there is a severe lack of insulin, resulting in the body not being able to use glucose. Other body tissues are broken down for energy, leaving a by product called ketones
When does gestational diabetes diagnose
24-28 weeks
How can a woman be tested for gestational diabetes?
fasting plasma glucose, plasma glucose and HBA1C.
Name the risk factors associated with gestational diabetes
BMI over 30, ethnicty, previous baby over 4.5kg, previous GDM or previous unexplained stillbirth
What results would demonstrate a positive GTT
fasting= over or equal to 5.6mmol/l
after eating= over or equal to 7.5mmol/l
Describe how gestational diabetes is caused
The placenta produces hormones, which affect the ability f insulin to allow glucose into cells for use of energy, therefore glucose levels build up in the bloodstream, and cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugars).
What are the risks of gestational diabetes on pregnancy and baby?
still birth, macrosomia, premature birth, c section, baby may suffer hypoglycaemia, jaundice
