Diabetes Flashcards
Fasting blood glucose test
- normal glucose range
< 100 mg/dL
Levels rise 1 mg/dL per decade of age
Fasting blood glucose test
- impaired fasting glucose (IFG)
> 100 mg/dL
Fasting blood glucose test
- diagnosis of diabetes
Obtained on at least 2 occasions
>126 mg/dL (even older adults)
glucose tolerance test (2-hr post-load result)
- normal range for adults
<140 mg/dL
glucose tolerance test (2-hr post-load result)
- impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)
140 mg/dL < 200 mg/dL
glucose tolerance test (2-hr post-load result)
- provisional diagnosis of diabetes
> 200 mg/dL
glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C) test - increased risk for development of diabetes
5.7 - 6.4%
glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C) test - poor diabetes control & need for adherence to regime or changes in therapy
> 8%
glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C) test - what does it test?
tests average levels of blood glucose over the past 3 months
criteria for diagnosing diabetes
- A1C > 6.5%
OR - fasting blood glucose >126 mg/dL
OR - 2-hour blood glucose >200 mg/dL during oral glucose tolerance test
OR - classic manifestations of hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic crisis; random blood glucose >200 mg/dL; polyuria, polydipsia, unexplained weight loss
normal FBG for 2-18 years
60 - 100 mg/dL
