DiabeteS Flashcards
Two main causes of endocrine/hormonal alterations
Elevated or depressed hormone levels
Target cell failures
Common Diseases of the Endocrine System
Diabetes mellitus
Thyroid disease
Obesity
Endocrine disease is characterized by
Disregulated hormone release (a productive pituitary adenoma)
Inappropriate response to signalling (hypothyroidism)
Lack of a gland (diabetes mellitus type 1, diminished erythroiesis in chronic renal failure)
Structural enlargement in a critical site such as the thyroid (toxic multinodular goiter)
Hypofunction
Of endocrine glands
Can occur as a result of loss of reserve, hyposecretion, agenisis, atrophy, or active distriction
Hyperfunction
Of endocrine glands
Can occur as a result of hypersecretion, loss of suppression, hyperplastic or neoplastic change, or hyperstimulation
