DHCP Flashcards
What is the role of a DHCP?
To give private IP addresses to devices on the same network
Where does a DHCP come from?
In homes it is provided by the router. In a corporation it can come from a local server within the business. For mobile internet is can come straight from the ISP
When would you use static addressing instead of DHCP?
For machines like printers that won’t likely change location from one network to another
Does DHCPv6 for IPv6 provide default gateway?
No. This needs to be obtained from the router advertisement message
What message does a device send out to connect to a DHCP server?
It sends out a broadcast packet called a DHCP discover, to find a DHCP server to receive addressing from
What happens when a DHCP discover reaches a DHCP server?
The DHCP server sends a DHCP offer. That the device that sent the discover will receive. The offer will contain the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway for that device. Then the device accepts the offer by sending a Request packet back to accept the offer
Then the DHCP sends an acknowledgement that it’s putting that IP address in to its table as being associated to that device
