Where is Dharavi located?
Close the the centre of Mumbai, neighbouring cities with Dadar and next to Mahim
What are the push factors?
Slum, noisy and crowded, smell, tight spaces, underdeveloped, poor amenities, poor development in rural areas
What are the pull factors?
No tax, centre of employment, economic development
Impact of migration to Dharavi
Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, rapid growth of slums.
Impact of migration out of rural areas.
Unable to develop, lack of workforce, more job opportunities, poor amenities.
Describe the urban problems faced in Dharavi (Environmental and People)
Shortage of space - 77.6% of urban dwellers reside in a room. A hundred thousand of them sleep on footpath. 62% of households reside in the slums.
Prone to natural and man-made hazards - cramped so prone to floods, water logging, and fire with higher population density.
Poor living conditions - lack amenities, extremely unhygienic conditions, no toilets and people defecating in open.
Health hazards - water contamination causes blood dysentery, diarrhoea, malaria, typhoid, jaundice, etc. 4000 cases so far.
Describe the squatter settlements.
If people are old enough (age above 6), then they can work and earn money. They make and sell goods and services unofficially and they don’t have a contract, so there’s no job security. Squatter settlement house over 1 million people.
Solution to Dharavi’s living conditions.
Vision Mumbai Project.
The project’s aim is to build one million low-cost homes and reduce slums, improve transport infrastructure by road and rail, improve air and water quality by reducing pollution.
By 2007, 200,000 people had been moved, and 45,000 homes were demolished in Dharavi.
Piped water and sewerage systems were established.
By 2015, 72 new trains were introduced on Mumbai’s railways. Platforms were raised to prevent people from falling into the ‘gaps’ between trains and platforms – the cause of many deaths
