He is upset and incredulous. “Impossible” “I can’t believe it”
What argument did Basil use against Dorian’s marriage to Sibyl?
Dorian’s “birth and position and wealth. It is absurd to marry too much
beneath him.”
Discuss what Dorian’s speech reveals about his nature of his love for Sibyl
and link it to the theme of the novel.
He sees Sibyl as a work of art. He loves her for her artistry. She excites his
imagination. Theme: relationship between art and real life. Dorian prefers
art to real life. Lives his life as if it were a play.
What is Lord Henry’s theory of life and marriage?
Lord Henry does not approve or disapprove. Life is not about making
judgements. Every experience is of some worth. The purpose of life is to
know oneself. His ideas about marriage: not a champion of marriage –
makes you unselfish and then you lose individuality. Women manipulate
men into marriage.
Why will Dorian always be fond of Lord Henry?
“I represent to you all the sins you have never had the courage to commit.”
