DF7 Polymers And Plastics Flashcards
What is a polymer molecule?
A long molecule made up from lots of small molecules called monomers.
What is an A-A polymer?
A polymer where all its monomers are the same.
What are examples of A-A polymers?
Poly(ethene) and poly(chloroethene).
What is an A-B polymer?
A polymer where it’s monomers alternate along the chain.
What are examples of A-B polymers?
Polyamides and polyesters.
What reaction are many polymers formed by?
An addition polymerisation reaction.
What is polymerisation?
Monomers joining together to produce long chain polymers.
What do the monomers in polymerisation usually contain?
Carbon-carbon double bonds (alkenes).
How is a polymer named?
By placing the name of the monomer in brackets and adding poly to the beginning.
What is copolymerisation?
Where more than one type of monomer is used in addition polymerisation.
