Devices and Peripherals Flashcards
What is the type of storage - NAS?
o Network Attached Storage (NAS)
▪ Dedicated server connected to a network, designed for storing data in a
central location
What is the type of storage - SAN?
o Storage Area Network (SAN)
▪ High-speed network of storage devices that can also be accessed by
multiple servers
What is tape storage, where may it be used?
Tape Storage
▪ Used more specifically in environments that need to store large amounts
of data for long periods e.g. hospitals
What is a storage system made exclusively of flash memory drives called?
Flash Arrays
What is RAID?
o Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID)
▪ Allows data to be distributed across multiple drives
What is colour depth?
Each pixel can be a different color, and the total number of colors an image supports is called its color depth
What is refresh rate?
Measured in Hertz (Hz), determines how many times your display
updates with new information per second
What are the specifications of VGA.
o Video Graphics Array (VGA)
▪ Defined a resolution of 640x480 pixels with 16 colors at a refresh rate of
60 Hz
What connector do all VGA devices use?
A standard D-shaped 15-pin connector
What came after VGA?
o After VGA, a new adapter called DVI, or the Digital Visual Interface, was
introduced
▪ DVI came in three varieties
● DVI-A (Analog variant)
● DVI-D (Digital variant)
● DVI-I (Supported both analog and digital output)
What does HDMI stand for?
High Definition Multimedia Interface
What are the benefit of Display Port (DP) and MiniDP?
o DisplayPort (or DP) is another type of connector commonly used with
computers to have higher resolutions
o Mini-DisplayPort offers high-definition video output up to 4K resolution, audio
output, and multi-stream transport for daisy-chaining multiple displays
What are the two forms of graphic cards?
Integrated and Discrete
What is Firewire?
o Firewire
▪ Legacy connection type that was based on the IEEE 1394 standard and
SCSI protocol
What does USB stand for, what types are there?
o Universal Serial Bus (USB)
● USB-A
● USB-B
● USB-C
What 4 types of short-range radio frequency connections are there?
Bluetooth
Passive RFID (Close range)
Active RFID (up to 100m)
Near Field Communication
What types of Registered Jack connections are there and what are their purposes?
● RJ11 (Phone Lines and Voice Service)
* The smaller of the two connector types and it is predominantly used for telephone systems
● RJ45 (Data and Digital Service)
* The larger sibling to an RJ11 connection and is widely used in Ethernet and network cabling
What frequencies can Wi-Fi work on and what are their purposes?
▪ It operates on two main frequency bands
● 2.4 GHz frequency has a greater range, but slower speeds
● 5 GHz frequency has faster speeds, but a shorter range
What is RFID?
o Radio Frequency ID (RFID)
▪ Using specially-encoded tags, RFID allows objects to be scanned and
identified
What is NFC?
o Near Field Communication (NFC)
▪ Requires devices to be very close to each other, typically a few inches. Considered to be a subset of Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID, and is often used for more secure interactions.
What is a driver?
o Driver
▪ Piece of software that allows the computer to communicate with the new device and use it to its full potential
What do you do if a device does not install automatically?
● Visit the device manufacturer’s website
● Download the correct driver
● Follow the on-screen prompts to install it
