deviation from social norms Flashcards
lesson 1
what is psychopathology
scientific study of mental disorders such as depression, OCD, phobias etc.
what is another word for mental disorders
abnormalities
what does deviation from social norms mean
if a person comes under any of these rules, they are said to be abnormal, they are not following the norm.
what are social norms
a set of rules which is based as acceptable behaviour that is created by a social group and is followed by by everyone so they do not look like an odd one out.
why do deviations of social norms have some limitations
as deviating can also be good sometimes, an example is when the suffragettes went against the norm, and actually caused good to happen.
Another reason is that social norms change over time, such as homosexuality no longer classed as an abnormality.
deviation from social norms does not always have to be correlated to and classed with a mental health consequence, people can also just be very eccentric and showy.
