Deviance Flashcards
Merton’s Strain Theory
Argues that deviance occurs when a society does not give all its members equal ability to achieve socially acceptable goals.
Strain Theory= “Structural Strain theory”
What society expects us to do
Conformist
accept the goals of society and the means of achieving those goals
Innovators
accept the goals of the society, but not the means; they look for new, or innovative, ways of achieving those goals
Different pathways of achieving socially sanctioned goals (not the norm)
Thinking about new and innovative ways
Ritualists
aren’t interested in the goals of society, but they do accept the means of achieving those goals
Living out their daily lives, living modestly, not huge aspirations
Retreatists
don’t accept the goals of the society or the means of the goals
Ex. people that live off the grid; not interested in societal norms
Rebels
don’t accept the goals of the society or the means of achieving those goals, so they create their own goals using new means
Primary Deviance
The first act of rule breaking, which may result in the rule breaker being labeled “deviant” and thus influencing how people think about and act toward him or her.
Secondary Deviance
Acts of rule breaking that occur after primary deviance and as a result of a person’s new, deviant label.
Stigma- by Erving Goffman
- Labeling difference
- Negative Stereotypes
- Separation of “us” vs. “them”- social distance
- Status loss and discrimination
