Newborn-2 Months
Physical: lift and turn head (momentarily) when lying on back (1 month), hands fisted and arms flexed
Social: begins to smile
2-4 months
Physical: begins to control head and feet (lift 45 degrees), hands to mouth and hands together
Language: Coos (2 months), squeals (4 months)
Social: smiles at mirror (4 months)
4-6 months
Physical: can sit supported (6 months), voluntary grasp (grasps blocks or cubes), rolls front to back (4-5 months) and back to front (5-6 months)
Language: makes vowel sounds
Cognitive: brings objects to mouth
Social: likes to look at self in mirror
6-9 months
Physical: crawling, sits without support, pull to stand (by 9 months)
Language: babbles (6 months), raspberries, laughs
Cognitive: peek-a-boo (object permanence), transfers objects from one hand to other, pincer grasp (uses thumb)
9-12 months
Physical: balance while standing alone, mature pincer grasp
Language: “mama” and “dada”
Cognitive: bangs two things together
Social: waves ‘bye-bye’ (10 months), plays games (peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake)
12-15 months
Physical: Gross motor- stands alone well, walks well (15 months). Fine motor- tower of 2-3 cubes
Language: uses 2-3 words (besides mama and dada)
Cognitive: follows one step commands (15 months)
15-18 months
Physical: Gross motor- walk backwards. Fine motor- scribbles
Language: >5 word vocab
Social: simple pretend play
Cognitive: knows function of ordinary items
18-24 months
Physical: Gross motor- throws ball overhand, kicks ball forward, stands on tip toes. Fine motor- use spoon and drink from a cup
Language: 10-50 word vocab, points to named body parts (4 of them), says his/her own name, repeats overheard words
Social: pretend play develops, copies others, parallel play with other children (24 months)
Cognitive: completes familiar sentences and rhymes, stacks 4 or more blocks, might use 1 hand more than other, follow 2 step instructions
24-36 months
Physical: Gross motor- jumps in place, rides a tricycle, stands briefly on 1 foot, climbs, runs, climbs stairs one foot at a time (2 feet each step). Fine motor- copy a circle, uses spoon well
Language: 100-200 word vocab, speaking in sentences
Social: empathy (24 months), understand idea of ‘mine’ and ‘his’ or ‘hers’
Cognitive: plays make-believe, puts 3-4 piece puzzles together, stacks 6 blocks
3-6 years
Physical: Gross motor- hops on one foot (4yo), skips (5-6yo), balances on 1 foot (3-4yo), catches bounced ball, steers bike (improves around 4yo), heel-to-toe walking (5yo)
6-12 years
Language: simple but complete 5-7 word sentences, 3 series commands in a row, 5 step commands (10yo)
Cognitive: should be able to focus on a task for at least 15 minutes (1 hour by age 9)
12-18 years
understand abstract ideas, move toward mature sense of themselves and purpose, question old value without losing sense of identity
