DEVELOPMENTAL-Lee Flashcards
What is the background to Lee’s study?
Hofstede proposed individualism-collectivism.
In individualistic cultures, peoples identities are defined by personal choices and achievements
In collectivistic cultures, peoples identities are defined by the groups they see themselves as a part of
What did Lee aim?
To find out if the culture a child grows up in affects their views about truth telling and lying
To see if the age of children affects their views about lying and truth telling as they get older.
What was the sample like?
Chinese children
120 children
40 7 year olds
40 9 year olds
40 11 year olds
Canadian children
108 children
36 7 year olds
40 9 year olds
40 11 year olds
What were the IV’s
Ethnicity of the child
Age of child
type of story(social or physical
pro social or anti social
What were the four types of stories told?
a child would behave anti socially and lie
A child would behave antisocially and tell the truth
A child would behave pro socially and lie
A child would behave pro socially and tell the truth
For half of the children, their stories were social stories, where behaviour would impact another child, and the other half their stories were physical stories, where behaviour had an impact on the environment
What was the procedure like?
Children were seen individually and the stories were presented in different orders to different children.
For each story, the children had to answer two questions:
-is what they did good or naughty
-is what they said about what they had done good or naughty
The child then gave answers using a 7 point rating chart.
Very very good- very very bad
What were the results?
If a character told the truth about a pro socially action, it was seen as less positive as children got older in china, and more positive as children got older in canada.
If a character lied about a pro social action, it was seen as more positive as children got older in china, and negative as children got older in canada
For the anti social stories, culture had no influence on the childrens responses. Both cultures rated it positive when they tell the truth about an antisocial action, and both viewed as negative when lying about an antisocial action.
