Q

What was the aim of this study?

A

To investigate social learning theory, by finding out whether children will imitate aggressive behaviour when given the opportunity - even if they saw these behaviours in different environments and the original model is no longer present

Q

What were the 4 hypothesis in this study?

A

1) ps exposed to an aggressive model will produce more imitative aggressive acts opposed to those exposed to a non-aggressive model
2) ps exposed to a non-aggressive model will show less aggressive behaviour than those with no model.
3) The gender of the model will affect behaviour, same gender models will show more aggressive behaviour
4) boys will imitate more aggressive behaviour than girls

Q

What were the controls of this study?

A
  • the children were rated on four 5-pint Likert rating scales on how aggressive they were by teachers and experimenters
  • mean scores were found and children allocated in 3s with other chisel ten of a similar score - then one from each triplet went to a different condition
  • control group not exposed to a model to give a base line

Q

Describe all 3 stages of the procedure

A

Room 1)
Children are taken to the first room by the experimenter, meet the model outside in the hallway. They are asked to come in and play. The child was taken to a corner with a table where potato prints and stickers were set out. The model the went to the other side of the room where the 5ft tinker you was = Aggressive - After 1 minute of playing with the tinker toy the model attacks the doll.
Non-aggressive - model plays silently for 10 minutes
After 10 minutes the experimenter takes the child to room 2.

Room 2 -
The child is taken to a room of attractive toys. After 2 minutes of playing. They are told the toys are for the other children and they are removed. This was done to create mild aggressive arousal.

Room 3 -
Told they could touch all the toys in this room. Some ps wanted to leave but were forced to stay, the experimenter went in with some of them. Inside there were aggressive and non-aggressive toys.
Aggressive toys = mallet, dart gun, 3ft bobo doll
Non-aggressive toys = tea set, crayons, bears
The child was kept in here for 20 minutes where behaviour was recorded by judges through a one way mirror. Taken at 5 second intervals with 240 responses overall for each child - there were four scales with 5-points:
1) Physical aggression
2) Verbal aggression
3) Aggressive towards inanimate objects
4) aggressive inhibition
