Background
Children don’t use asthma pumps correctly placing them at health risks
Aim
To see if operant conditioning could be used to encourage children to want to use their inhalers and do it correctly

22 boys and 10 girls from Australia
Recruited on a random basis from asthma clinics
Clinics were within a 51km radius of Perth
Procedure
Questionnaire given to parents about child’s current inhaler
Phone calls were made during the 2 week study asking if the inhaler had been used the day before
Then another questionnaire about the funhaler was completed
2 dependant variables
Children’s behaviour- frequency that inhaler was used and problems
Attitudes of children and parents towards medication
Results
Behaviour- children who had used the inhaler the day before. Existing= 59%. Funhaler= 81%
Attitudes- pleasure from inhaler. Existing= 10%. Funhaler=68%
Conclusions
It lead to an increase in use and correct use of the inhaler
Parents less likely to give up
