Developmental abnormalities Flashcards
what is microdontia?
when the teeth are very small (upper laterals and 8s)
what is macrodontia?
when the teeth are really large (incisors and canines)
what is the difference between fusion and gemination?
fusion is 2 individually formed teeth joined together where as gemination is a single root with 2 crowns
what would you expect to see with concrescence?
when roots become joined together by cementum only
what is Dilaceration?
an abnormal bend in the root of a tooth
what is Odontomes?
irregular teeth, unusual shape, often do not erupt.
what is an enamel pearl?
nodules of enamel with a core of dentine
can you describe what you would see on a radiograph if a tooth had dilacerations?
twisted root or crown on a tooth
what is the difference between dens en dente and dens evaginatus?
dens en dente is when there’s a tooth within a tooth where as dens evaginatus is when the pulp horn extends into a core of dentine on the occlusal surface of a first or second premolar
what is amelogenesis imperfecta?
Hereditary disorder affecting the enamel Partial or complete lack of enamel
Yellow or brown rough crowns
Susceptible to decay
Very difficult to keep clean due to roughness and sensitivity
what is dentinogenesis imperfect?
hereditary disorder May occur alone or with with skeletal condition
is poorly supported by defective dentine and can flake away, grey/blue appearance
Pulp death commonly occurs
what is fluorosis and what would it look like in the mouth?
Caused by increased concentration of fluorideAffects those teeth in amelogenisis at the time of fluoride toxicity
Defects range from white flecks to opacities throughout enamel depending on mild or severe fluorosis severe fluorosis brown staining.
what teeth are most commonly affected by anodontia or hypodontia?
Partial anodontia/hypodontia - 8’s, 5’s and 2’s – (take care when being asked to extract primary dentition – radiographs).
how would you manage abnormalities of the dentition?
Treatment of sensitivity
Oral hygiene
cosmetic treatment
anterior composites
extractions
