Developmental Flashcards
What are the strengths of the Developmental Approach?
Allow us to understand the effects of childhood.
The area contributes to our understanding of the nature nurture debate.
What are the weaknesses of the Developmental Approach?
Studies can be based on qualitative data which is subject to bias.
Studies may be longitudinal - take time to conduct and require greater resources
Similarities between Developmental and Physiological
Use of small samples
Both contribute to the nature nurture debate
Differences between Developmental and Physiological
Physiological - nature alone, Developmental - both nature nurture
Dev - only uses children
Similarities between Developmental and Psychodynamic Perspective
Both assume that childhood experiences affect adulthood
Both add to nature nurture debate
Weaknesses between Developmental and Psychodynamic
Psycho - qualitative data only, Dev - some quantitative
Useful applications of Dev, very little use of Psycho
Similarities between Developmental and Behavioural Perspective
Both are deterministic and ignore the effect of free will on behaviour
Most studies lack generalisability
Difference between Developmental and Behavioural
Behaviourists use animals in research, Dev - no animals
Dev - nature and its role in development, Behav - nurture more important
What is the Developmental Approach?
All behaviour in adulthood is affected by childhood experiences.
Developmental changes are a result of inherited factors (nature) such as puberty and lifetime experiences (nurture) which include interactions with other people.
