Development of the Mandible Flashcards
True of False; Meckel’s cartilage contributes to the development of the mandible.
False; it is close in position to the mandible but that is it!
When does the development of the mandible occur?
6 weeks
Where does the development of the mandible occur?
Extends from ear to the midline.
What separation is the development of the mandible associated with?
Separation of the lingual from inferior alveolar nerve (meckel’s cartilage gets in the way and creates the separation)
Where does the condensation of the mesenchyme and bone start?
Where the Inferior Alveolar nerve bifurcates.
How does the mandible ossify (move)?
Anteriorly just short of the mid-line
Posteriorly toward the mandibular foramen
How does the horizontal body of the mandible ossify?
Unilaterally they join at the midline shortly after birth.
What does the horizontal part of the mandible provide for?
Canal that houses the IA and Incisive Nerve
Individual compartments to house tooth germs.
How is the mandibular ramus ossified?
Moves away laterally from Meckle’s cartilage.
Where is the mandibular ramus initiated?
Area which will become the lingula (where IA nerve enters the mandible).
What does Meckel’s cartilage create?
Malleus of middle ear
Sphenomandibular ligament
The rest of the cartilage is completely resorbed.
What cartilage takes up space while other things are developing?
Meckel’s cartilage
What is In Utero mandibular growth influenced by?
Secondary growth cartilages.
What are the three types of secondary growth cartilage associated with in utero mandibular growth?
Condylar
Coronoid
Symphyseal
What tissue(s) contribute directly to to development of the mandible?
Condylar
Coronoid
Symphyseal
