development of the Face and Palate Flashcards
what has appeared by the 2nd week?
the stomodeum (mouth pit) and the buccopharyngeal membrane between it
what occurs in the 4th week?
the pharynx breaks down
what produces the floor of the mouth, lower jaw and lower lip?
the mandibular prominence of the 1st arch (which bounds the stomodeum from below)
what happens to the maxillary prominence?
it grows ventrally above the stomodeum, forming the floor of the orbit and fusing with the lateral nasal prominence along the line of the nasolacrimal duct
where does the philtrum of the upper lip develop from?
the intermaxillary segment which is formed by the merging of the medial nasal prominences
how is the upper lip formed?
the maxillary prominences and the philtrum fuse
how is the nasal septum formed?
it grows down from the base of the mesenchymal precursor of the skull
how is the secondary palate formed?
2 palatal shelves meet and unite
what is the nerve supply of all of he structures above?
trigeminal (CN V)
what is the innervation of the frontonasal prominence and its derivatives?
ophthalmic division of trigeminal (CN V1)
what is the innervation of the maxillary prominence and its derivatives?
the maxillary division of trigeminal (CN V2)
what is the innervation of the mandibular prominence and its derivatives?
mandibular division of trigeminal (CN V3)
how does a cleft lip occur?
failure of fusion between the maxillary and medial nasal prominences
