How did Britain react to Hitler’s foreign policy?
A
- many British politicians were convinced Hitler didn’t want war when he signed the non-aggression pact with Poland in 1934
- the British public felt the treaty of Versailles had been too harsh and Germany should reclaim some of what had been lost
- Neville chamberlain used appeasement in hope of stopping s full scale war
- Britain signed the stress front with France and Italy to unite against Hitler

- France we’re suffering greatly with the depression
- there were rebellions against the French government
- the French government found it difficult to concentrate on a threat from Hitler with their own problems

- Stalin was concerned about Hitler who had promised to destroy communism
- stalin was also weary of the USA, Britain and France
- Stalin’s decides to start cooperating with the capitalist states to stop Hitler’s expansion into the east

A
- unemployment was at 25% in USA so Roosevelt focused on creating jobs for his people
- in the 1936 election Roosevelt promised to keep America out of any war in Europe
- in 1938 Roosevelt tried to get Hitler to stop invading countries but Hitler ignored this

A
- Hitler leaves the League of Nations disarmament conference in 1933
- Hitler tells Austrian nazis to cause havoc and the chancellor of Austria (Dolfuss) is murdered in 1934
- the Saar plebiscite resulted in the Saar being returned to Germany and could be used to power his industry and build weapons in 1935
- the Anglo- german Naval agreement had seen Germany’s Navy increased to 35% of the British one which went against the treaty of Versailles
- Hitler was not concerned by the stress front which had been signed in 1935
- Hitler rearmed the army to 1 million men, built a Luftwaffe (Air Force) and introduced conscription in 1936
