Used to describe a country’s level of economic development
Total value of goods and services produced by a country
Expressed as per head (per capita) of the population
• makes it a more accurate development indicator

A
Social measure devised by the UN Links wealth to health and education Measured 0-1, 1 being the highest Lowest 10 countries in Africa Factors: • number of years of education • GNI per capita • life expectancy at birth More accurate as a development indicator than GNI

NEEs and LICs: Didn't measure or record data Corruption Not all figures are disclosed Focused on particular figures to make the country seem more developed Informal economy outways formal • don't pay tax
