What is development?
The progress made by a country over time
What is the development gap?
The gap between the “have’s” and the “have nots”
What is GDP per capita used to measure?
Measure’s the economic value of goods and services inside a nation’s borders
What is a benefit of GDP per capita as a way to measure development?
It provides a simple comparable average between countries
What is a negative of GDP per capita as a way to measure development?
It can be difficult to accurately measure some employment for e.g. in the informal sector where employment is not easily subject to government regulation or taxation
What is HDI?
The Human Development Index - A composite measure that takes into account the health, wealth and education levels of a country
What is a benefit of the use of HDI as a measure of development?
Takes into account more than just the economy
What is a negative of the use of HDI as a measure of development?
Success in one element of the index may skew overall results
What is the economic sector balance?
Shows the proportion of people employed in each sector
What is a benefit of the economic sector balance?
It provides additional detail to GDP figure
What is a negative of the economic sector balance?
Can be “re-based” to include new sectors
What is GII?
Gender inequality index - A composite measure that takes into account the reproductive health, empowerment and female labour force participation
What is a benefit of the GII?
Considers development between genders
What is a negative of the GII?
Not all cultures would consider the measures as appropriate or relevant
What is the EPI?
The environmental performance index - Measures air quality including both pollution outside and air quality within peoples homes
