Development Functional Status of Young & Middle-Aged Adults Flashcards
What are the themes associated with young and middle-aged adults? How do they differ?
Young Adults -
1.) vocational pathway: finding a sense of career and family
2.) demands of partnering : societal pressure to be in a relationship
Middle aged adults - focus on self and others, being linked to the welfare of others (focus on their needs but doing meaningful work with the next generation)
1.) gains - psych and social, have better emotional regulation, increased wisdom ; sexual freedom, focus on yourself
2.) losses- physical (decline in health, chronic illness) ; menopause or loss of fertility, losing a partner
According to Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development, which stage is characteristic of young adults? Middle-aged adults?
Young Adults:
1.) Identity vs confusion (13-21), refining a sense of self, testing roles and integrating themselves to form a single identity. When thats not acheieved, they feel confused
2.) Intimacy vs Isolation (22- 39?) , struggle to form relationships and feel isolated when not able to
Middle Adults:
1.) Generactivity- What am I leaving behind as I get older? mentoring etc
2.) Stagnation: feeling like they haven’t done anything meaningful
Discuss the nursing implications associated with caring for young & middle-aged adults in the acute care setting.
Forced dependency - someone who was once independent now is forced to rely on healthcare workers
Manifestations of chronic illness - someone doesnt genuinely feel like they’re that old, but being the hospital has made them think about their mortality
Management of role responsibilities - people have other obligations
Health literacy - how well can the patient understands what’s being explained to them? noncompliance with healthcare recommendations. ask the patient what’s going on
Constrained choices - socioeconomic factors that affect the patient
What is functional status?
The performance of activities that are relevant to personal expectations and social norms within that individuals community.
Goal:
Meet basic needs
Fulfill roles
Maintain health & well being
How does functional status impact day-to-day life?
How well you can perform your daily tasks impacts what you are able to accomplish that completes their needs
What are the four dimensions of functional status?
1.) Capacity - max potential for the person to perform (a task, needs) , these are not directly translating into everyday performance, just their max potential
2.) Performance - everyday life performance
3.) Reserve - the difference between functional capacity and performance. dormant capabilities that are applied when needed
4.) Capacity Utilization - A person realizes their potential and so their capacity, exertion, and effort increases.
so performance meets the capacity and the reserve decreases
What aspects of living may affect quality of life? Why are these important?
1.) Do they having a positive outlook
2.) Good support system ?
What are essential learning considerations of young to middle age adults? Which teaching strategies would be relevant to this patient population?
Interactive talking to your patient
What are the goals of the patient? make sure the patient has a voice
Complication prevention - discharge planning and teaching during day one of admission
Considerations
- what does the patient need to know
- what does the patient see about the topic youre teaching?
- are they motivated to learn
- how do they learn?
- dont assume that because someone is educated , they understand HEALTH literacy
mindful of detail - some ppl want play by play, some ppl want the need to know of what’s going on
motivational interviewing - non confrontational techniques that can encourage someone to change
Describe important components of wellness promotion for young and middle-aged adults.
National public health
- increase vaccinations
- increase eye exams
- increased oral screenings (leading public health indicator of disease)
Mental factors for promotion
- effective use of social supports (where do you get your resources when your not okay. As a nurse, eradicate social stigmas)
- coping skills , if im not okay, what am I gonna do about it?
- emotional intelligence (recognizing it is okay not to be okay)
What are some concerns that contribute to vaccine hesitancy within the US?
NOT TRUSTING OUR HEALTHCARE System
vaccinations being accosiated with political sides
