Development And Population🍄 Flashcards
Population Structure
The number of each sec in each age group (EG 10-14).
Demographic Data
All data linked to population EG birth rate, death rate etc.
Malawi has the most youthful population, this means…
Young people dominate its population structure.
What does population structure tell you?
A lot about the country’s level of development.
As countries develop…
GDP per capita increases.
What does increased wealth mean? What can a country spend more money on?
Health, education and piped water supplies.
Are rapidly falling death rates now typical of most developing countries?
Yes
Over time what rates fall in developing countries?
Birth and death rates, dependency ratios, fertility rates, infant mortality rates and maternal mortality rates.
Over time what rates increase in developing countries?
Life expectancy, years of schooling and literacy rates.
Birth Rate
Number of live births per 1000 people per year.
Death Rate
Number of deaths per 1000 people per year.
Dependency Ratio
Proportion of people below (aged 10-14) and above (over 65) normal working age.
How can you calculate the dependancy ratio?
By adding both groups together and dividing by the number aged 15-64 (the working population), multiplied by 100. The lower the number, the greater the number of people who work and are less dependant.
Fertility Rate
Average number of births per woman.
Infant Mortality
Number of children per 1000 live births who die before their first birthday.
