Development and Health - Primary Healthcare Flashcards
Name the four methods of primary healthcare
ORT (oral rehydration therapy)
Vaccination programmes
Improving sanitation
Barefoot doctors
Describe ORT PLZ
Oral Rehydration therapy is a mixture of salt and sugar with clean water to help people with diarrhoea. Cholera is the main cause of diarrhoea and can be fatal if not treated - but with ORT over 99% of patients survive.
ORT is cheap and effective and can be administered by untrained staff, meaning it can be used widely across developing countries. The WHO estimates 1 million babies’ lives are saved annually by ORT
Describe vaccination programmes
Vaccination programmes such as the (UNICEF polio immunisation campaign) are delivered to rural areas with less general healthcare.
Campaigns such as this one mean that many children now have access to healthcare (such as vaccinations) when they didn’t used to. by 2020 the polio epidemic was only in 2 countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan)
Describe improving sanitation.
charities such as Toilet Twinning work with countries to improve sanitation and communities to install pit latrine. ash compost from pit latrines can be used as compost.
Pit latrines reduce the spread of diseases such as cholera and are cheap
Describe barefoot doctors
barefoot doctors provide education about health and administer basic first aid
they are effective as they can treat illnesses before they become serious and are trusted by the community
