Climate Change - Local and Global Effects and National and International Management Strategies Flashcards
Name the local effects of climate change.
agriculture and forestry, changes within ecosystems, flooding, extinction of coral
Name the global effects of climate change.
Sea levels rising, changes in weather patterns, changes in population density
Local Effects 1/4
How is agriculture and forestry affected by climate change?
an increase in global temperatures may result in a longer growing season, increasing food production and the range of crops being grown in certain areas.
Growing conditions could be improved by warmer weather, increasing productivity.
Local Effects 2/4
How are ecosystems impacted by climate change?
changes in temperature and precipitation means that species that are native to an ecosystem may struggle to survive and invasive species may begin to thrive
Local Effects 3/4
What are the impacts of flooding that is caused by climate change?
Low lying coastal areas (such as Bangladesh) may suffer flooding, and this may lead to the large scale displacement of people due to the loss of land and destruction of property.
Local Effects 4/4
How does climate change result in the extinction of coral?
10% of land species are expected to go extinct, and coral reefs suffer 80% bleaching.
When water is too warm, corals expel algae living in their tissue, causing them to turn completely white.
This happens in places like the Great Barrier Reef
Global Effects 1/3
What causes rising sea levels?
Higher global temperatures result in ice melting in areas such as Antarctica and Greenland.
Thermal expansion of the sea is another cause of rising sea levels, which accounts for 40% of sea level rise.
Global Effects 2/3
How are changes in population density an effect of climate change?
Coastal flooding causes people to migrate, increasing population density in inland areas. This causes tensions and overcrowding. Diseases such as malaria are more likely to spread to areas not previously affected.
Cities such as Nairobi are not currently affected by mosquitoes but that may change
Global Effects 3/3
How is weather affected by climate change?
more variable and extreme weather patterns, such as flooding, draughts and hurricanes, are likely to happen more often due to increased sea temperatures (or global temperatures).
An example is the 2017 hurricane season in the Caribbean. An increase in global precipitation is due to global warming.
Name some local/national ways of managing climate change.
Name the international strategy employed.
recycling, using car less, saving energy.
the Paris climate agreement
Local/national management strategies (1/3)
Tell me about recycling.
The 3 Rs: reducing and recycling waste and reusing items will reduce emissions from the manufacture and disposal of products.
Local authorities have recycling programmes in place and have put up signs to encourage recycling. This has cut down on a large amount of waste as people are making more sustainable choices
Local/national management strategies (2/3)
Tell me about saving energy.
the use of energy saving products saves energy. Energy saving light bulbs may save up to £55 per year and also have a longer lifetime so produce less waste.
The public is being educated to reduce their energy usage by doing things such as turning off lights when not in the room, and turning of appliances that are not being used.
The Scottish government encourages people to consider their impacts on the environment through the Greener Scotland campaign.
Insulation reduces energy usage as less heat is lost. Insulation can be installed in the roof, floor and walls of homes, and grants can be provided to reduce insulation costs.
International (1/1)
Tell me about the International management strategy that you learned about.
The Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 involves leaders of the UN agreeing to limit global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees.
Developed countries provide financial support to developing countries to help them reach their goals.
