Development Flashcards
HICs
- high income countries
- richer countries with an income more than $12,746
NEEs
- newly emerging economies
- countries which are beginning to develop
- mainly due to rapid industrialisation
- still kind of poor but becoming wealthier
LICs
- low income countries
- poorest countries
- gni per capita less than $1045
- manly primary industries
How can climate support development
- tropical climate = high rainfall = good harvesting
- good farming will increase exportation and wealth
- improves health of population
Climate can hinder development
-heavy rainfall = flooding:
= contaminated water, waterborne diseases
= restricting transport, affecting businesses
= money will be spent on repairs
Location can support development
Coastline countries have more connections with other countries across the globe
=easier exportations = increase in gni
=selling to HICs means more profit
=can attract TNCs
Location can hinder development by
Landlocked countries have no access to sea:
- difficult to export
- can be costly as fees will be payed to pass through neighbouring countries to access the coast
- costly to fly out goods = decrease of gni
- can have conflict between other countries when using roads in their lands
Landscape can support development by
-countries with flat ground
=easier to build on
=attract tncs to invest
=increasing GNI
Landscape can hinder development by
-countries with high relief and dense forests =restricted land =unsuitable for factories -countries will deserts =limitations on transport
How mining hinders development
- lots do informal sectors means no tax payed
- rebel troops have mines and weapons = causing warfare
- uncertainty of health = increase of death rates
- conflict with nearby tribes
How mining supports development
-increases relationship with TNCs
-profits/taxes contribute to GNI per capita
=better quality of life
