Determinism Vs Free Will Flashcards
What is the debate?
Whether human behavior is controlled via internal or external forces.
Biological Approach
The approach which states that it is biology that determines behavior. There has been a gene linked to intelligence and depression is linked to low serotonin levels
Humanistic Approach
That Human choose their behavior acting upon consequences
Psychodynamic Approach
Freuds theory- act an internal drive which may have been the result of childhood experiences. Repress Mechanism
Environmental Approach
Classical and operant condition- behavioural approach.
Cognitive Approach
That behavior is determined by thought processes
Concordance between twins and OCD
Identical twins 68% and no identical 31%. Although shows biology is a factor not 100% must be room for free will too
The intelligence match with twins 80% not 100%
48 to 18 for schizophrenia
Cognitive Theory overrides determinism
Interactionalist Bandura argued although environment can be an influencing factor- social learning theory. Soft determinism
Soft or Hard Determinism
Full determinism or allows for some free will
Individualist and Collectivist impact
A limitation to the humanistic approach is that free will is more of an individualist concept. Determinism can be used to explain behavior in more collectivist cultures. Determinism is more universal- in drug therapies in biological approach
Demmott
Butterfly affect even in core science subject-not total determinism
Libbets study
Conducted experiments where the participants had to choose a button. Found that brain already registers decision before action- meaning free will explanation is limited
Face validity limits free will
The idea of face validity holds support for Free will because a persons impressions and experiences are constantly exercising free will by choices made
