A means of weaving the strands of a rope back into themselves to prevent the end of the rope from fraying; results in an increase in the diameter of the rope

A support extending from the upper to the lower portions of the carriage platform

Bacterins
Suspensions of bacteria that have been killed by heat or chemical means; used as a vaccine to stimulate the production of antibodies

An agent that inhibits the growth or action of bacteria
Bad Actor
A horse that is difficult, disagreeable, and uncomfortable to ride
Bad Doer
A horse that does not eat well or does not digest much of what he does eat
Badge of Honor
An award presented to riders competing in Prix des Nations competitions with points given as follows: Bronze, 5; Silver, 25; Gold, 50; competing in an Olympic Game is counted as competing in five Prix Des Nations
Badminton
The Badminton Three-Day Horse Trials; one of the chief fixtures in the eventing calendar since its foundation in 1949; held at the Cotswold home of the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England
Bagman
A bagged fox; in countries where foxes are scarce, it is sometimes customary to bring a fox to the meet in a sack and turn him loose
Balanced Bit
A bit that naturally returns to the straight up-and-down position, releasing the curb strap
Bale
Hay that is packed together and bound into a unit with wire or string; generally weighs 60 lbs, but weight and size vary greatly depending on type of hay
Bali
Indonesian breed with many primitive features; docile and cooperative; used for riding and pack
Ball
A medicinal compound enclosed in a gelatin capsule and administered with a balling gun; this can be a dangerous procedure and should only be done by a veterinarian; also called a medicine pill

A syringelike device used to give large pills to horses
Ballotade
The leap of a horse when four feet are in the air and only the shoes of the hind feet are showing; an air above the ground performed by a horse trained in the classical manner; the movement involves a half rear, then the horse jumps forward, drawing the hind legs up below the quarters, before landing on all four legs
Balloted out horse
Horses that have been nominated for a race or event but, because of entries greater than the designated safety limit, are not allowed to compete
Bandy Legs
A horse that is pigeon-toed on his hind feet with the points of his hocks turned outward; also called bow legs

Old breed similar to Arabians; originated in North Africa and widely used for cross-breed improvement; known as a docile riding horse
Barbary Pack
A rough, scratched-together pack of hounds not normally kenneled together but rounded up for the occasion with the hope that they will have sufficient nose and stamina to provide sport
