Muscular System Flashcards
What are the types of muscles?
Smooth, cardiac, and skeletal
What nervous system controls voluntary muscle movement?
Somatic nervous system
What are the types of muscle fibers?
Type I, Type IIA, Type IIB, and Type IIC
Describe Type I muscles.
“Slow-twitch” muscles, used for endurance activities.
Aerobic (requires oxygen), and uses primarily fatty acids for power.
They appear red due to the presence of myoglobin, an oxygen binding protein (sounds like hemoglobin, another oxygen binding protein in red blood cells)
What is Type II muscle used for? List the categories of Type II Muscle.
Fast-twitch activity, short bursts of power.
Type IIA, IIB, and IIC
Type II fibers with a greater cross-sectional area are stronger.
Describe Type IIA muscle.
The “slow” fast-twitch muscle fiber.
Can use both glycogen and fatty acids for energy.
Used for speed at long distances.
Aerobic muscle fiber
Describe Type IIB muscle.
The “fast” fast-twitch muscle fiber.
Uses only glycogen.
Used for intense, short bursts of energy.
Anaerobic.
Describe Type IIC muscle.
A transitional muscle fiber that will change to B or C with training. Usually found in younger horses.
What is glycogen?
A power source used for high-energy activity. The stored form of sugars and starches in the body, stored in muscle tissue and the liver.
