Desk Reseach Flashcards
what is Desk Research?
A type of research strategy based on gathering previously collected and analysed data from other studies.
What kind of research is Desk Research?
Unobtrusive research since the researcher doesn’t interfere with the situation thus reinforcing validity and reliability.
What are Primary Sources?
those that weren’t intended to do research but tell the researcher about feelings or opinions.
*it is less susceptible to negative influences or answer tendencies.
What are Secondary Sources?
those that have already been analysed by other researchers.
Selecting Data in Desk Research
It is key to select data randomly to increase representativeness
In DR: the researcher already knows which data will be collected
In IR: incremental selection of data
What is the Operationalisation Problem?
The data collected by the researcher doesn’t exactly fit the research since it wasn’t intended for it. Thus, the researcher will have to try to match the data as accurately as possible (Proxy Data).
*Meta Data: modifications of the data selected.
Methods for gathering/analysing data in Desk Research(3)
Content Analysis: analysis of **existing ** data by focusing on and interpreting the content.
(exploratory)
Second Content Analysis: analysis of statistical data by taking into account the operationalisation.
(testing)
Meta-Analysis: come up with general insights to test hypotheses or generate axioms.
-> Systematic Literature Review: collect scientific knowledge systematically
-> Aggregate prior studies: analyse results for general conclusions
