Design & Specification - Flash Cards - Level 3

1
Q

Childrens Home, WSCC - What type of specification was produced and why?

A

Prescriptive specification, writing a specification for a non-load bearing partition is within my scope of competence. I was able to ensure that the partition was constructed to the standards agreed with the client.

Q

Childrens Home, WSCC - How did you incorporate residential requirements? Provide example?

A

I reviewed the acoustic requirements for schools in the BRs which referred to BB93, as this is not a school I then referred back to the BRs to obtain the acoustic requirement for new walls - Min 25mm with amin density of 10kg/m3.

Q

Childrens Home, WSCC - How did you consider impact damage?

A

Within the specification I allowed for a 12mm ply lining to the timber frame, provided strength and impact protection. I also used the BG white book to specify the BG Duraline board which is a higher density board for impact protection.

Q

HDP, WSCC - How did you collate and include feedback from the stakeholders within the stage?

A

Stakeholder workshops - presented design information, obtained comments and feedback to incorporate in to the stage final release.

17
Q

HDP, WSCC - How did you ensure MandE client requirements were met?

A

Ensured that MandE design detail was communicated with relevant stakeholders. I ensured that the relevant MandE designers were present during engagement to provide technical input outside my scope.

18
Q

HDP, WSCC - How did you consider maintenance when advising the client?

A

I ensured that the FM team understood the technology that was being implemented, ensured that the equipment was accessible for servicing and discussed maintenance requirements so that the client can ensure the correct specialists could be appointed on project completion.

19
Q

HDP, WSCC - How did you coordinate and make recommendation to location changes of ASHPs?

A

I held an on site meeting with key stakeholders and the designers to discuss re-location, this was then followed up in writing for each site and a variation raised for the contractor.

20
Q

HDP, WSCC - Why were the ASHPs not able to be located within 1 meter of drainage?

A

Due to the product holding propane, this is heavier than air so if located near drains and the product leaked the proposed would access the drains causing a risk.

21
Q

HDP, WSCC - Example of a design element discussed?

A

Development from the use of standard radiators to fan coil units for better distribution of heat over large open spaces due to water at lower temperatures.

22
Q

Childrens Home, WSCC - Childenrs home, describe the wall make up?

A

Timber partition - 100X47mm studs, head and sill plate fixed at 600 centres, noggins installed where board edges were to be located.
Sound insulation - Isover 50mm insulation was friction installed in the voids.
Ply - Where ply was installed studs were reduced to 400mm centres, ply was fixed at 150 centred to edges and 300 centred in centre studs.
Board - BD duraline board installed at 300 centres through ply in to studwork.
Plaster skim

23
Q

Childrens Home, WSCC - What was the detail for fixing the partition to the floor? How was it mechanically fixed and what was specified?

A

Following requirements of BS 8000-8 on dry linings - Head plate fixed to joists at 600mm centres, sole plates fixed to joists at 600 centres, end stud fixed to walls at 600 centres. I specified appropriate timber and masonry fixings. For example 100mm timber mechanical screw from spax for the securing of timber to timber.
