Design & Specification - Flash Cards - Level 2
Windows, Castlewood - How did you ensure the drawings you produced met the required standards?
All drawings referenced the required specification documents, statutory requirements and associated documentation.
Windows, Castlewood - What drawings did you provide for the project?
Site plan, floor plan identifying locations, elevations, windows and door schedule.
Windows, Castlewood - Why did you provide a performance specification?
A performance specification is provided so that the contractor can approach a supplier to obtain a contractor proposal for the window requirements. This means that the client is not responsible for the supplier taking away risk.
Windows, Castlewood - What was included within the performance specification?
Required standards that the units need to meet i.e. appearance, size limitations, glazing requirements (top hung Part K), ironmongery, ventilation, fixing requirements (Centres not exceeding 600mm, 150 away from corners, gap sealant, BS8214). This will include reference to standards such as BS for polyester power coating and Approved Document Part L & K. Building Bulletin 101.
Windows, Castlewood - What did the project required to meet in Part L?
Part L, Volume 2, 1.6 W m2k for glazing.
Windows, Castlewood - Why did you recommend the replacement from timber to aluminium?
Although timber is a good insulator, it requires regular maintenance. Thermally broken aluminium provides better thermal performance and requires minimal maintenance.
Windows, Castlewood - How are aluminium units more thermal efficient and more hard wearing?
Aluminium units are thermally broken where the frame is broken inside utilising a poor conductor like GRP to join the inner and outer frame together. They also do not require decoration once powder coated.
Windows, Castlewood - What did the project require to meet in Part M?
Ensuring that the external doors met the required minimum width, which detailed in Part M is 775mm, level threshold with max lip of 15mm.
Windows, Castlewood - What did the project require to meet in Part K?
Ensuring the safe opening and closing of windows - handles are not to be more than 1700mm high if obstructed or 1900mm high if unobstructed.
Glazing thickness was achived depepending on size.
Windows, Castlewood - Were there any other Approved Documents referenced?
Part F - ventilation requirements.
Roof, TAB - What supplementary information did you include in addition to the SOW?
Drawings, NBS specification, preliminaries.
Roof, TAB - What was the supporting specification that was included?
BMI Redland specification document, NBS specification, site plan, roof plan and elevation.
Roof, TAB - What was the tile specification for the project and why?
BMI Redland Cambrian Slate - previous covering was an interlocking concrete tile, replacement was match the existing look of surrounding roofs.
Roof, TAB - Who was the manufacture used to assist in the specification?
BMI Redland - provided tile specification and associated NBS.
Roof, TAB - What is a NBS specification? Why was this used?
Nation Building Specification is a specification software that provides construction based specification information to describe materials, standards and workmanship of a project. This ensures that projects are undertaken to the correct standards including British Standards, Building Regulations and other requirements. This is appended to the tender documentation.
