Q

what is the watchmaker analogy

A

if we see a watch on the floor in a jungle we would think someone put it there and we would see the complexity of it
The watch was made by someone on purpose - can see from the gears inside the watch.
so if a watch was made by a watchmaker then the world was made by a world maker i.e GOD

Q

argument by disanalogy

A

situations a and b are dissimilar enough that Paley’s argument does not work
the watch has gears for functions but there is so much in the natural world that isn’t understandable in the same way

Q

paley’s argument against disanalogy

A

it does not matter how it was made, it matters that it was made
just because you don’t know the purpose doesn’t mean that there isn’t one

Q

the argument against looking for purpose

A

if we are the ones creating a purpose for things that aren’t inherently there then we are the real creators of purpose in the world, not God

A

the creator that Paley posits seems to make a lot of mistakes like cancer, hurricanes, etc.
