design and manufacturing Flashcards
What is a design brief used for
a designer needs a design brief to begin work on a new idea. often provided by a client and they will outline their expectations:
product+purpose, budget+timescale, where it would be sold and used. target market - who will use it.
what is done when the design brief is agreed on
a design specifcation can be drawn up which includes more product detail
what, who, why, how much and how long, materials and aesthetics, environment, safety and measurables (dimensions and weights)
why might a design brief be modified
during the testing of a prototype, designers may discover errors in dimensions, material isnt strong enough, selected finish isnt wearing enough. adjustments will need to be made earlier on as it will have a lower impact on time and cost
manufacturing specification
document containing all the information needed to make a product. eg: technical drawings, CAD diagrams, timing plans and process flowcharts
examples of content in manufacturing specification
assembly, annotations, equipments, materials, quantities, dimensions, quality control
