Q

Apprisive Requirement

A

Z must be something we think of as good or bad

-if we have no opinion about Z it is no grounds for desert

Q

Proportionality Requirement

A

Z must be in proportion to Y

  • very good Z justifies very valuable Y
  • moderately bad Z justifies moderately bad Y

Q

Peak

A

The best/exact amount of benefits an individual deserves

Highest point in desert curve

More or less would be less good

Q

Straight Desert Curve

A

1 to 1 ratio of goodness to benefits

  • Curve is discontinuous
  • Has constant slopes
  • Symmetrical on either side of peak
  • Identical for both individuals

Q

Curved Desert

A

Closer to the peak curve is gental and not much goodness is lost, but as you get further away from peak (further away from what you deserve) the greater the decrease in goodness is.

  • Parabolic shape
  • Continuous function
  • Symmetrical relative to peak
  • Identical for both individuals

Q

Bell-Motion Desert

A

If you are a very deserving person it is not as bad if you have more than you deserve than it would be if you had less, and vise versa

Goodness decreases at a slower rate when you have more but a faster rate when you have less.

-curve is discontinuous

Q

Comparitive Desert

A

Like cases should be treated alike

Making sure deviation (equal amount of badness) is fairly shared

  • if A has more than peak so should B
  • if A has less than peak so should B

Q

Ratio View

A

Allocated resources should be split proportionally

One person deserves twice as much, so if shortage of resources they should be split to the ratio between each peak.

So that the ratio would be the same as if resources come back.

16
Q

X-Gap

A

The gap in the amount of benefits they have versus how much they should have at their peak.

If A’s peak is 10 and they have 12, X-Gap=2.
So B should also have 2 more.

Bell Curve:
A and B have equal still proportionally, but B’s goodness may drop faster when they have more than what they deserve
Therefore it is less good for them to be split proportionally.

17
Q

Y-Gap

A

The gap in the about of goodness they are at and the amount of goodness they should have at their peak.

Matching goodness levels rather than amount of stuff.

Results are the same for straight Desert between Y and X gaps.

Bell Motion:
A has proportionally far more stuff than B, but the goodness achieved between each amount is equal.
