Desensitisation Flashcards
What is desensitisation and how does it relate to aggression?
A: It’s a reduction in emotional responsiveness to a stimulus (psychological & physiological), making aggressive behavior more likely.
How does repeated exposure to violent media affect children?
They become used to violence, feel less empathy for victims, and may see aggression as a normal conflict resolution method.
What study supports desensitisation theory?
Weisz & Earls showed “Straw Dogs” (rape scene); participants later showed greater acceptance of sexual aggression and less sympathy for victims
What research supports desensitisation?
Krahe found lower physiological arousal (via skin conductance) and increased aggression in violent media viewers.
What is a limitation of the desensitisation explanation?
It doesn’t explain all aggression. Catharsis (psychodynamic theory) may be a better explanation in some cases.
