Descriptive statistics in univariate data Flashcards
Univariate data
one dependent variable
What are measures of central tendency
Mean, median and mode
Mean
most common, good is data is normally distributed but can be misleading if skewed
Median
Good for skewed ordinal, interval or ratio data
Mode
Only used in nominal data
Positive skew
tail pointing right, mean larger than median
Negative skew
tail pointing left, mean smaller than median
If data is symmetrical, should measures of central tendancy differ?
No
Range
Never used alone, sensitive to extreme scores
Variance
Average of squared deviation of each number taken from the mean
Standard deviation
Measure of variability, square root of variance
Kurtosis leptokurtic
squished data
Kurtosis playkurtic
flat spread out data
