ANOVA Flashcards
What does an ANOVA do?
Compares several means and can manipulate more than one
Is ANOVA an omnibus test
Yes
Why can’t you do multiple t-tests?
Family wise error increases
Calculate family wise error
1 - (0.95) to the power of n (number of tests)
DF of SMm
One less than the value used to calculate e.g. number of means
DF of SSr
number of ppts in each group - 1
DF of SSt
number of all observations - 1
When to use apriori tests
Planned and hypothesis led, best
When to use post hoc tests
Unplanned or trend analysis
Rules for planned contrasts
Tests must be independent from each other, only compare 2 ‘chunks’ of variance and one less than the number of groups can be run, if a group isn’t involved code as 0
Coding for planned contrasts must =
0
Bonferoni
alpha level / number of tests
Why use Bonferoni
Very conservative
Trend analysis linear
straight line
Trend analysis quadratic
curved line
