Describing Slave Ships Flashcards
What were slave ships before they became slave ships
Slave ships were regular cargo ships but then they were converted to carry millions of slaves. The people who created them were very clever in designing them.
Describe the hulls that slaves were forced to stay in
The holes were torture for slaves.
They had very little headroom which made many slaves claustrophobic
They were tightly packed to fit as many slaves as possible. Tight packing caused diseases because of slaves being too close to each other
How long did the entire journey take
The entire journey took 6 to 8 weeks but many slaves did not arrive at their destination because they had been sick and over thrown overboard or been beaten to death, or killed themselves because they thought that death was more appealing than staying alive being a slave.
Why did the Dave ship owners as many Africans on board the ship as possible?
They wanted as many Africans because they wanted to maximise the profit.
They also didn’t want all of them to die and when they arrived at their destination to only have a little bit of slaves and not earn a lot of money
