Describing Motion Flashcards
What is distance
A scalar quantity that shows how far an object moves
What is speed
A scalar quantity that shows rate of change of distance
What is a scalar quantity
A physical quantity that can be measured
What are 3 examples of scalar quantity’s?
Distance, speed, mass
What factors affect typical speeds?
Age, terrain, fitness and distance travelled
What are the typical walking, running and cycling speeds?
Walking- 1.5 m/s
Running- 3 m/s
Cycling- 6 m/s
What are the typical speeds for cars, trains and aeroplanes?
Car- 13-30 m/s
Train- 50 m/s
Aeroplane- 250 m/s
What is the speed of sound?
330 m/s
What is velocity?
A vector quantity that shows Speed in a particular direction
What is displacement?
How far the start and finish from each other in a straight line
What is acceleration?
Rate of change of velocity
How do you calculate acceleration from a distance time graph?
By finding the gradient of the curve
How do you calculate displacement in a velocity time graph?
Counting the squares underneath the graph
Find the area of shape underneath line
