Describe Structure And Position Lungs Flashcards
What lung has 3 lobes and what lung has 2.
What are the lobes called?
The right lung has 3 lobes. The left has only 2.In both lungs, the top lobe is the superior lobe.
In the right lung, the middle lobe is called the middle lobe.
In both lungs, the bottom lobe is called the inferior lobe.
Describe the right main bronchus.
What is the potential problem with this?
Wider, shorter and more vertical than the left.
Problem: foreign bodies entering the trachea are more likely to get stuck in the right main bronchus.
What is a pleura?
The pleura consists of a closed sac of serous membrane that encases both lungs. They contain a small amount of serous fluid called pleural fluid.
What is the purpose of the pleura?
It protects and cushions the lungs while allowing the lungs to expand and recoil within the sac, while still being lubricated by the pleural fluid.
What are the 2 layers in the pleural membrane?
Outer layer is parietal pleura.
Inner layer is visceral pleura.
What does the bronchi divide into?
- bronchioles
- terminal bronchioles
- respiratory bronchioles
- alveolar ducts
- alveoli
What are the 2 zones / divisions of the lower respiratory tract?
What is the anatomical dead space?
- Conducting zone
- Respiratory zone
The anatomical dead space is in the conducting zone. It’s referred to this as no alveoli in this zone and therefore no gas exchange.
